Myoglobin, a striated muscle-specific oxygen-preserving protein, is a famous heme protein to have its three-dimensional structure revealed by X-ray crystallography, but its function is still obscure. Our study is to reveal the molecular mechanism underlying functional oxidative post-translational modification of myoglobin and irreversible post-translational modification of signalling proteins induced by hypoxia or hyperoxia, and aim to establish a novel therapeutic strategy.
